A message from the chancellor: update on today’s lockdown

Chancellor Addresses UNC Community Following Campus Alert

In a message to the Carolina community, Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz provided an update and reassurance following a recent campus alert. The alert, which was activated at 12:55 p.m., was prompted by reports of an individual brandishing a weapon at the Student Union. Thankfully, UNC Police confirmed that no shots were fired, and the situation was linked to a personnel matter involving one of the university’s auxiliary units.

The swift response of law enforcement led to an “all clear” message being issued to the campus community at approximately 2:10 p.m. Authorities have since determined that there is no longer an immediate threat to campus, and a suspect is now in custody. UNC Police are working in collaboration with the Chapel Hill Police Department to gather additional information and continue their diligent response to the incident.

This unsettling event, coming just days after another armed individual prompted a lockdown on campus, has understandably raised concerns within the Carolina community. Chancellor Guskiewicz announced that the university is currently in Condition 3, a heightened state of alert, until 5 p.m., after which it will transition to Condition 2 until 11:59 p.m. As a result of these safety measures, all residential classes for the rest of the day have been canceled, with plans to resume normal class schedules tomorrow.

Chancellor Guskiewicz emphasized that support is readily available to assist those affected by these distressing incidents. Students, including graduate and professional students and postdocs, are encouraged to reach out to the Dean of Students team or Counseling and Psychological Services. Faculty and staff are also urged to utilize the Employee Assistance Program for support.

The Chancellor expressed his gratitude to UNC Police and the Emergency Operations team for their prompt and efficient handling of the situation. He also extended thanks to the university’s faculty, staff, and students for their cooperation and patience as the institution continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its community members.

As the university navigates these challenging circumstances, the Carolina community remains resilient and committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its members.
