AWS to invest $35 billion expanding Virginia data center footprint

Virginia, (Qnnflash) – Amazon Web Services (AWS) is planning a substantial increase in its investment in data centers within Virginia. This week, Governor Glenn Youngkin and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership unveiled a $35 billion plan for AWS to establish multiple data center campuses across the state by 2040. While AWS already has a significant presence in Virginia, this announcement points to new spending on data center expansion.

The move is touted as the largest economic development capital investment in Virginia’s history and is expected to result in the creation of at least 1,000 new jobs in the state. AWS Director of Economic Development Roger Wehner emphasized the company’s longstanding commitment to Virginia, having invested over $35 billion in the state since 2006, which has boosted the Commonwealth’s economy and supported numerous jobs.

Governor Youngkin expressed enthusiasm for AWS’s decision to expand its footprint in Virginia, highlighting the state’s status as a leader in innovation and cloud computing.

Amazon already has a substantial presence in Northern Virginia, with ongoing expansion efforts in various counties including Loudoun, Prince William, Fauquier, Culpeper, and Fairfax. Despite local opposition to some of these projects, it appears that there will be various tax incentives presented to AWS as part of this latest round of investment in the state.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the General Assembly‚Äôs Major Employment and Investment Project Approval Commission to secure the expansion project. Pending approval by the Virginia General Assembly, a new ‘Mega Data Center Incentive Program’ is being developed, offering AWS potential benefits including an extension of data center sales and uses tax exemptions, as well as an MEI custom performance grant for various project-related costs.
