Baltimore Native Excels Aboard U.S. Navy Warship in Mayport

By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class James Green, Navy Office of Community Outreach

MAYPORT, Fla. – Chief Petty Officer Alexis Tisdale, hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, proudly serves aboard the USS Jason Dunham, a formidable U.S. Navy warship based in Mayport, Florida.

A 2010 graduate of Catonsville High School, Tisdale made the decision to join the Navy twelve years ago, driven by her desire to protect her family and fellow citizens. The opportunity to explore diverse cultures while traveling the world also served as a motivating factor.

In the military, Tisdale draws on the invaluable lessons she learned back in Baltimore, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and unity even in challenging circumstances. “I learned it doesn’t matter if you like someone or not,” Tisdale said. “You still have to work as a team to accomplish the mission and return home safely.”

As a guided-missile destroyer, the USS Jason Dunham boasts an impressive array of warfighting capabilities. From tomahawk missiles and torpedoes to guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system, the ship stands ever-ready to execute multi-mission operations, either autonomously or as part of a larger naval fleet.

Over 300 dedicated sailors, including Tisdale, serve aboard the USS Jason Dunham. These men and women possess highly specialized skills, responsible for maintaining engines, handling weaponry, and various other critical assignments that ensure the ship’s constant mission readiness.

The Navy plays a pivotal role in safeguarding global commerce, with 90 percent of all trade conducted by sea. Additionally, the security of undersea fiber optic cables, which underpin internet access, is of utmost importance. Navy officials emphasize the critical connection between the nation’s prosperity and a strong, skilled Navy.

Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, articulated the Navy’s unwavering mission, stating, “Our mission remains timeless – to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat ready at all times, focused on warfighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every single level. This is our calling. And I cannot imagine a calling more worthy.”

Tisdale acknowledges the significance of her role in the Navy as part of a team that strengthens alliances, modernizes capabilities, and maintains military readiness to support the National Defense Strategy. “The Navy is vital in maintaining an invisible border across the seas,” she remarked. “That provides protection for our families to live their day-to-day safely.”

Throughout her military service, Tisdale has had numerous opportunities to achieve personal and professional accomplishments. However, her proudest achievement lies in witnessing the success of the sailors she has trained. “The greatest feeling is seeing the sailors I have trained work and succeed,” she said.

Serving in the Navy fills Tisdale with immense pride, and she would willingly do it all over again. She expresses gratitude to her parents for supporting her decision to join and extends her appreciation to her family, friends, and all those who support the Navy during deployments.

Tisdale recognizes the invaluable benefits of her Navy career, such as completing free college courses, owning a home, and providing a secure environment to raise her son. Her dedication and service exemplify the commitment of the United States Navy to protect and defend the nation and its people.
