barcelona have ‘big expectations’ teenage star Yamal – Xavi

(Qnnflash) – Barcelona’s head coach, Xavi Hernandez, has expressed immense optimism for the young talent Lamine Yamal, following the teenager’s standout performance in Sunday’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Villarreal.

Yamal, a mere 16 years old, demonstrated his exceptional abilities on the field by orchestrating the opening goal for Gavi and narrowly missing the target twice, with his second attempt leading to a simple tap-in for Robert Lewandowski to secure the game-winning goal.

When questioned about Yamal’s performance in the match, Xavi conveyed his astonishment at the teenager’s achievements at such a young age, stating, “Of course I am surprised by what he does at his age, he’s only just 16. Everyone is — I am not an exception. He nearly always makes the best decision, which is what makes the difference in football.”

The coach went on to express the club’s high hopes for Yamal’s future, emphasizing his consistent ability to make effective decisions on the field. Xavi revealed, “We have big expectations, even more so when you see what you see [on the pitch]. He is not starting games on a whim. He starts because we feel he can effect matches. Like I said, he nearly always makes the right decision, which is important, picking the best option. Two assists today, he’s intelligent, mature. He’s extraordinary.”

Yamal, who secured a spot in the first team during the summer, became the youngest player to ever feature for Barcelona in LaLiga when he made his debut at the age of 15 against Real Betis in April. His recent contributions, including his Player of the Match performance in the win against Villarreal, have garnered significant attention and praise from fans and media alike.

Xavi expressed confidence in Yamal’s ability to manage the increased media spotlight, highlighting the teenager’s humility, strong work ethic, and genuine passion for football. The coach remarked, “I don’t think there will be any problems managing things considering the way he is and his personality… There is a lot of competition at Barça, of course, but he’s ready to play.”

Yamal’s remarkable performances have prompted discussions about his potential inclusion in the upcoming Spain squad announcement. Although born in Spain and having represented the country at youth levels, Yamal is eligible to play for Morocco and Equatorial Guinea through his parents. Xavi maintained that the decision lies with the young player himself, saying, “It’s a personal decision… I hope he spends many years here with Barça because he is a player who can mark an era.”
