Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie announce separation

Canada, (Qnnflash) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, have publicly announced their separation after 18 years of marriage. The couple shared their decision on Instagram, stating that it came after many heartfelt and difficult conversations. They also requested privacy during this time. Despite the separation, they emphasized that they remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and the life they have built together.

A statement from the prime minister’s office confirmed that the couple has signed a legal separation agreement. They have three children, aged 15, 14, and nine, and will continue to share joint custody. Trudeau and the children will remain at Rideau Cottage, the prime minister’s official residence in Ottawa, while Gregoire Trudeau will be moving into separate accommodation in the city. However, she plans to spend ample time with the children at Rideau Cottage to ensure they have a normal and supportive upbringing.

The couple first met as children when Gregoire Trudeau was a classmate of Trudeau’s youngest brother, Michel. They reconnected as adults and co-hosted a charity gala in 2003, leading to their marriage in May 2005.

Over the years, they have faced challenges, with Trudeau acknowledging the ups and downs of their marriage in his autobiography. Although they were frequently seen together in the early years of Trudeau’s term as prime minister, more recently, they have reduced their joint public appearances.

Despite the separation, the couple remains committed to their children and will spend time together as a family during vacations, starting next week. Justin Trudeau is the second Canadian prime minister to announce a separation while in office. His parents, Pierre and Margaret Trudeau, separated in 1979 and divorced in 1984 during Pierre Trudeau’s final year as prime minister.
