Death toll from earthquake surpasses 11,000 in Turkey and Syria

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria has reached at least 11,000, officials said.

In Turkey, the death toll has risen to at least 8,574 and nearly 50,000 have been reported injured, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday during a visit to the affected areas near the epicenter of the quake.

In Syria, the total number of deaths has now reached 2,800, including 1,540 in rebel-controlled areas in the northwest and 1,260 in government-controlled areas of Syria, Health Minister Dr. Hassan Al-Dass announced Gobash, according to Syrian state media.

The total number of Syrian casualties in all affected areas rose to 5,000 [2,250 him in government-controlled areas and 2,750 him in rebel-controlled areas].

Aid agencies and rescue workers say the death toll is likely to continue rising as many people are still trapped under the rubble and freezing weather conditions hamper rescue efforts.
