Fatal Virginia crash involving Tesla under investigation by US safety regulators

Virginia, (Qnnflash) – Following a fatal crash involving a Tesla suspected of utilizing a partially automated driving system, U.S. auto safety regulators have dispatched an investigative team to examine the incident in Virginia. This recent crash, occurring in July, marks the 35th Tesla crash under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) since June 2016. In all these cases, the agency is scrutinizing the potential use of partially automated driving systems like Autopilot. Tragically, at least 17 individuals have lost their lives in these accidents.

The NHTSA disclosed in official documents on Thursday that the Tesla involved in the crash collided with a heavy truck, providing no further elaboration. According to the Fauquier County Sheriff’s office in Virginia, the incident transpired on July 19 when a Tesla collided beneath the side of a tractor-trailer that was pulling out of a truck stop. This collision led to the tragic demise of the Tesla driver. In response, the truck driver was charged with reckless driving.

These investigations underscore the ongoing concerns surrounding the operation of partially automated driving systems and their interactions with various road conditions and scenarios. As regulators delve into the details of each crash, the automotive industry continues to grapple with the complexities of incorporating advanced driver assistance technologies while ensuring safety remains paramount.
