House Majority Leader Steve Scalise says he is being treated for cancer

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana announced on Tuesday that he is undergoing treatment for cancer. In a statement, Scalise shared that he had been experiencing unusual symptoms and, following blood tests and further evaluations, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer that is highly treatable.

Scalise, 57, expressed his commitment to continuing his work as Majority Leader and serving the people of Louisiana’s First Congressional District. Despite his diagnosis, he intends to maintain his duties and expects to return to Washington after undergoing treatment over the next several months. Congress, currently on a monthlong August recess, is set to reconvene next month.

The announcement was met with expressions of support from fellow politicians, including Sen. Bill Cassidy, a fellow Louisiana Republican, who extended his well wishes to Scalise. Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California also offered his encouragement, emphasizing Scalise’s strength and resilience. McCarthy referred to Scalise as a faith-filled fighter who has previously overcome significant challenges, including surviving a mass shooting during a congressional baseball practice in 2017.

Scalise’s past adversity includes being wounded in the hip during the 2017 shooting, which led to several surgeries and a three-month absence from the House floor. Despite the injuries, he has demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination in his recovery, continuing to fulfill his duties as Majority Leader.

President Joe Biden also reached out to Scalise to convey his best wishes for a swift recovery. As Scalise embarks on his cancer treatment journey, his dedication and resolve are expected to continue serving as an inspiration to those around him.
