Kylian Mbappé breaks the French single-season record with 54 goals in France’s victory over Greece.

II France’s 1-0 victory against Greece in the Euro 2024 qualifying match, Kylian Mbappé scored his 54th goal of the year for club and country, breaking the previous mark of 53.

The previous record was set by the late shooter Just Fontaine in the 1957–58 season, when he scored 53 goals.

It also put the forward for Paris Saint-Germain on the same number of goals for the season as Erling Haaland. However, the Manchester City scorer can take the lead back when Norway plays Cyprus on Tuesday.

Konstantinos Mavropanos tripped Antoine Griezmann and gave Mbappé a penalty. Ten minutes into the second half, Mbappé scored the winning goal from the penalty spot, keeping France’s record of four wins out of four in qualification games.

Odysseas Vlachodimos, the goalie for Greece, saved Mbappé’s first shot, but the penalty had to be taken again because the keeper stepped out of his line.

Then, for the last 20 minutes, Greece only had 10 players because Mavropanos got a red card for taking down Randal Kolo Muani.

The only thing I regret is that we couldn’t play it safe when we had chances to score the second goal. In football, you never know what will happen. They could have scored on the last corner. My team is much younger, so they will also have to learn about that, but the guys who were here are all very good. There were four games total, and we ended up with 12 points. It’s just what we need to reach our goal, which is to get to the Euros in Germany. There was a lot of disappointment after the World Cup, which was a great tournament. The run was a big deal. Even though they play for the top teams, younger players lack the experience of their retired predecessors. However, they have the quality to make it a pleasure for me to be with and accompany them. Didier Deschamps, the head coach of France

On Monday, Mbappé reached the milestone of scoring 40 goals for France. He has only played 70 games for Les Bleus, so he only needs 14 more goals to tie Olivier Giroud’s record.

France hasn’t given up a goal in qualifying. In September, they will play the Republic of Ireland at the Parc des Princes.

In other Euro qualifying games, England kept its perfect record going with a 7-0 win over North Macedonia.

Harry Kane scored twice, giving him 58 goals for England as a whole. Bukayo Saka, a young player for Arsenal, got a hat trick.

Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips finished off the rout, and England is still in second place, six points ahead of Ukraine.
