Lamborghini capitalizes on the EV craze by unveiling a new electric bull.

The Lamborghini Lanzador now exists solely as a conceptual vehicle; however, the renowned Italian manufacturer of high-performance automobiles asserts that it serves as a glimpse into the forthcoming debut of their inaugural totally electric model, slated for production in the year 2028.

The aforementioned vehicle does not align with the typical characteristics of Lamborghini’s renowned low-profile, two-seater supercars. The Lanzador, boasting a remarkable power output of 1,300 horsepower, exhibits a distinct resemblance to Lamborghini sports cars in terms of its general low-profile design. However, it diverges from its sports car counterparts by featuring a higher ground clearance, enabling it to traverse challenging terrains.

The Lanzador, unlike a gas-powered Lamborghini sports vehicle where space is allocated for a gas engine typically positioned behind the seats, features compact rear seats that do not require such accommodation. The movable or foldable nature of these components allows for increased storage capacity beneath the vehicle’s expansive tailgate. Beneath the surface, there exists additional capacity for storage.

The concept vehicle is slated to be transformed into the fourth model line for the performance brand, which currently consists of two conventional sports car types and an SUV.

Lamborghini has been in the forefront of pioneering this particular type of innovative vehicle for an extended duration. The introduction of vehicles such as the Urus SUV and the Huracán Sterrato, a sports car designed for off-road capabilities, has familiarized customers with the notion that Lamborghinis are not only limited to low-profile two-seaters.

A connection between a high-end sports car and a reliable SUV

The forthcoming electrified model will establish a connection between Lamborghini’s avant-garde sports cars and its utilitarian SUV.

According to a statement made by Lamborghini chief executive Stephan Winkelmann, the fourth model represents a logical extension of the current portfolio and serves as an ideal connection between the Urus and the brand’s super sports vehicles.

Lamborghini’s decision to introduce its inaugural all-electric vehicle as a distinct model line, rather than as a substitution for an existing model, is grounded in a deliberate rationale.

According to Winkelmann, the current state of electric vehicle technology is not sufficiently advanced to be employed in conventional two-seat high-performance sports cars. The batteries required to meet the desired power and driving range specifications would possess excessive weight and size, so impeding the ability to execute high-speed cornering characteristic of Lamborghini sports cars, which contributes to their exhilarating experience.

There are further OEMs, such as Rimac and Automobili Pininfarina, the latter of which incorporates Rimac technology, that currently offer electric two-seat supercars with price tags in the multimillion-dollar range. However, Mate Rimac, the inventor of Rimac, has acknowledged that electric vehicles still possess certain limits in comparison to their gasoline-powered counterparts, particularly in the realm of supercars.

Currently, Lamborghini intends to introduce plug-in hybrid supercars featuring a two-seat configuration, whereby gasoline engines are integrated with electric motors. This integration serves the purpose of minimizing the requirement for large and cumbersome batteries.

In contrast, the Lanzador, a vehicle with a seating capacity of four, possesses sufficient space to accommodate the large batteries. Porsche, which, akin to Lamborghini, is affiliated with the Volkswagen Group, adopted a comparable strategy in the development of their inaugural electric vehicle. The Porsche Taycan electric vehicle (EV) is equipped with a four-seat configuration, distinguishing it from the Lanzador model by its inclusion of four doors. In a similar vein, the Taycan’s increased length facilitates the accommodation of sizable battery packs, hence enabling robust performance capabilities.

Lamborghini asserts that the Lanzador possesses the capability to be driven on a daily basis, akin to the gas-powered Urus SUV, which presently constitutes fifty percent of Lamborghini’s total sales.

The positioning of the driver and front passenger seats within the cabin is intentionally set at a lower level, aiming to replicate the tactile experience associated with sports car seating arrangements. The absence of a central touchscreen, which is commonly found in contemporary vehicles, is notable. Passengers are equipped with individual displays, while the driver occupies a position in front of a digital screen that presents diverse forms of information.

The front wheels are powered by one electric motor, while the back wheels are powered by another, resulting in the provision of all-wheel drive. The Lanzador is equipped with a variety of active aerodynamic elements, including fins and vents that are capable of adjusting their positions as required. The two primary functions of aerodynamic designs in vehicles are to optimize airflow to enhance driving range and to generate downforce to improve road-holding capabilities during cornering and acceleration.

Lamborghini has made a firm commitment to exclusively offer “electrified vehicles” in its product lineup, encompassing both plug-in hybrid and completely electric variants, with the target of achieving this transition by the conclusion of 2024. The corporation has not made a definitive commitment to completely eliminate internal combustion engines within a certain timeframe.
