Maryland lieutenant governor got funding from donors linked to far-right extremist movement

Maryland, (Qnnflash) – Aruna Miller, who gained prominence as the first South Asian woman to be elected state lieutenant governor in Maryland, is facing scrutiny for her connections to far-right Hindu nationalist groups and alleged intimidation tactics against those critical of her.

Records reveal that Miller has received at least $110,000 in campaign donations since 2011 from supporters associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Hindutva, a nationalist ideology akin to white supremacy. The BJP-led Indian government, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has faced criticism for its discrimination against religious and minority groups.

Miller and Maryland’s first Black governor, Wes Moore, have attempted to distance her from these connections by featuring a webpage on their campaign site countering claims of her alignment with Hindu nationalist ideologies. They assert that campaign funds are unrelated to the Hindutva movement.

However, critics point out that their campaign has received significant donations from individuals linked to the Hindutva movement, and that Miller’s ties to the movement go beyond just financial support. For instance, Miller attended a White House dinner honoring Modi, who has been accused of facilitating human rights abuses.

Some observers argue that Miller’s denouncements of the BJP and Modi are not enough, and they urge her to disassociate from individuals and ideologies linked to the far-right Hindu movement. Concerns are raised about the influence of such groups on public officials and the potential divergence from American values.

Miller’s office maintains that she condemns hateful ideologies and remains committed to building an inclusive and welcoming state for all residents. However, critics continue to question her associations and the influence of the Hindutva movement on her political career.
