Samsung demonstrates foldable devices of the fifth generation

Samsung is bolstering its foldable smartphone lineup with a slew of new enhancements, but the company isn’t addressing the primary barrier to entry for the market: the high price.

Updates to Samsung’s tablets, smartwatches, and foldable gadgets were unveiled at the company’s annual Unpacked event on Wednesday, which was held in Samsung’s home nation of South Korea for the first time. However, all of the gadgets only provide minor enhancements over their predecessors, such as updated display and processing technology and a few extra features.

The Galaxy Z Fold, with its 6.2-inch screen, opens like a book to reveal a 7.6-inch display, while the Z Flip5, with its 6.7-inch screen, stole the show at Samsung’s Unpacked presentation. Both new models of smartphone boast upgraded aesthetics, upgraded cameras, and increased battery capacity.

The cost, however, has not decreased. Both the Z Flip5 (starting at $999.99) and the Z Fold5 (starting at $1,799) are priced similarly to other foldable smartphones on the market.

Samsung dominates the market for foldable smartphones, and the company is still optimistic about the future of the design. The widespread adoption of foldable and flexible displays has lagged behind the resurgence of interest in classic flip phones among celebrities and influencers.

Between 2019 and 2022, the number of foldables shipped around the world increased from roughly 600,000 to 13 million, as reported by Counterpoint Research. Shipments are projected to top 100 million by 2027, accounting for roughly 38% of the premium market share, the company said. However, market research firm iDC stated that 1.2 billion cellphones were supplied worldwide in 2017.

The abnormally high pricing of these gadgets are likely to blame for most of their lack of popularity. Foldables could gain more popularity if their prices were reduced, but expensive parts like flexible screens and custom-built hinges suggest that won’t happen anytime soon.

Samsung’s v.p. of mobile product management Drew Blackard predicted that foldable devices’ pricing would eventually drop, and that they would eventually become the company’s flagship devices.

In an interview before the big reveal, he speculated that prices might begin to fall after product lines and categories reached a certain degree of maturity. It is still our opinion that these goods represent the cutting edge of technological advancement.

But for now, Samsung has to persuade people to part with their cash.

The latest phones

About two-thirds of Samsung’s (SSNLF) foldable phone shipments are of the Z Flip, which now has a cover screen nearly four times the size of the original. With greater room to work with, users may install new clocks, gain easier access to widgets, utilize the entire keyboard, and even shoot full-screen selfies.

The camera of the Galaxy Z Flip5 has been updated with artificial intelligence to produce crisper shots at 10x zoom and to reduce visual noise, and it can also make use of Samsung’s improved Nightography features to improve images captured in low light. It also has a better hinge than before.

You may get the gadget in a wide range of hues, from mint and graphite to cream and lavender to gray and blue and green.

The Galaxy Z Fold5, designed at power users and professionals, is slimmer than its predecessor and features an upgraded Snapdragon CPU capable of running more apps simultaneously. A new, more portable S Pen Fold Edition is included. Color options for the gadget include blue, black, gray, and ivory.

In addition to the 11-inch, 12.4-inch, and 14.6-inch models of the Galaxy Tab 9, Samsung also displayed the Galaxy Watch6 with enhanced sleep and heart tracking.
