The new Apple Watch feature for gesture control will have everyone touching the air.

In recent days, I have engaged in telephonic conversations, listened to music, and navigated through various widgets on the recently released Apple Watch Series 9, all accomplished without any physical contact with the device. The application has been utilized to deactivate the alarm on my timepiece in the early hours of the day, halt timers, and access a notification when burdened with an excessive number of bags.

The utilization of the Apple Watch as a hands-free device for interacting with its screen, despite its diminutive size, may initially appear as a novelty. However, this approach proves to be effective in public settings.

The most recent collection of smartwatches from Apple, including the Watch Series 9 and the top-tier Ultra 2, incorporates novel gesture functionality known as Double Tap. This feature enables users to use the device by tapping their index finger and thumb together in a repeated manner. Additionally, it possesses the capability to navigate around widgets in a manner akin to rotating the digital crown.

The aforementioned feature is not entirely novel, as the previous iteration of the Apple Watch Ultra included the ability to execute such pinch-and-clench actions with its Assistive Touch accessibility tool. However, Apple’s choice to prioritize the integration of such a feature suggests a growing inclination towards a future that relies less on physical touch. Furthermore, this development occurs three months subsequent to the company’s introduction of the Vision Pro mixed reality headset, which is scheduled for release in the next year and features a comparable finger touch control mechanism.

How it functions

The Double Tap feature operates in conjunction with the most recent accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart rate sensor of the Apple Watch. This sensor system detects any interruptions in blood flow that occur when the user’s fingers are squeezed together. The data undergoes processing through a novel machine learning algorithm and operates on an accelerated neural engine, a dedicated piece of hardware designed to efficiently execute artificial intelligence and machine learning operations.

Although the underlying principle is comparable, there are distinct variations in gesture controls between the Vision Pro device, which possesses the capability to monitor users’ eye and hand motions. According to Apple, the need for a distinctive and seamless interface to facilitate user interaction was the driving force behind the inclusion of gesture control in the headset. In contrast, the implementation of Double Tap primarily aims to streamline the user experience on the Apple Watch.

When the display of the Apple Watch is activated, the device exhibits an automated response by detecting contact between the fingers. The function effectively operates as a binary response mechanism, allowing the user to either affirm or accept an incoming call. Specifically, the user can activate this feature by performing a double-tap gesture, which involves covering the smartwatch with their entire hand. It is worth noting that this action also has the capability to swiftly mute the device. In the event that a song is being played, it is possible to interrupt its playback by executing a double tap, and thereafter perform another double tap to resume its playback.

While it is possible to discreetly activate the display and perform the gesture in close proximity to one’s body in an attempt to disguise the motion from others, I have observed that the effectiveness of this action is much enhanced when the gesture is executed in a slightly elevated position. Nevertheless, this phenomenon becomes more conspicuous, necessitating a period of adjustment when observing it firsthand.

This aspect also pertains to the concept of societal acceptance. Currently, I find the notion of individuals frequently engaging in this action within public spaces somewhat amusing. According to Annette Zimmerman, an analyst at Gartner Research, the acceptability of the system will ultimately be determined over time. Apple demonstrates a strong emphasis on use-case analysis and prioritizes customer feedback to identify areas for improvement.

Likewise, there was a period of adjustment for individuals to acclimate to the aesthetic of Apple’s AirPods upon their unveiling in 2016, with numerous individuals expressing criticism regarding their appearance when protruding from users’ ears. These entities have now become integrated into contemporary culture.

There are additional learning curves associated with the Double Tap function. Due to my right-handedness and the placement of my Apple Watch on my left hand, the act of tapping my left fingers together in order to activate the control requires an additional one to two seconds of mental synchronization.

The direction of hands-free technology

Apple is not the only technology business engaged in the development of gesture controls similar to those aforementioned. Samsung televisions, certain smartphones, and Microsoft’s mixed reality headset all integrate hand gesture features. However, this represents Apple’s most significant endeavor thus far, as incorporating this feature into a prominent gadget such as the Apple Watch will inevitably draw much attention to the notion of hand gestures.

Apple’s decision is commendable as it effectively distinguishes the company from its competitors in terms of innovation and user-friendliness. According to Sachin Mehta, a senior analyst at ABI Research, this also demonstrates Apple’s dedication to the realm of artificial intelligence. The introduction of the double tap gesture is in line with Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance a cohesive and user-friendly interface across its range of products. This development will solidify the Apple Watch’s position as the leading smartwatch in the market.

The functionality of the Vision Pro operates in a distinct manner since it employs eye and hand tracking technology to facilitate punching and swiping controls for the user. In order to facilitate user interaction with the headset, a distinct user interface was necessary, and gestures offer a means of control even when the technology obscures the user’s face.

Apple has demonstrated its long-term consideration of gesture control by recently submitting patent applications that specifically pertain to gesture controls, including those applicable to the Apple TV. According to Mehta, it is evident that there is a strong likelihood of an increased incorporation of gesture functions in Apple’s future product lineup.

Going beyond the gesture

The Apple Watch Series 9 has an array of notable features, including the incorporation of Apple’s cutting-edge proprietary silicon processor and the integration of ultrawideband connectivity, alongside the existing Double Tap functionality. The proposed functionality allows users to input health data using voice commands, utilize the “name drop” feature to exchange contact information by physically touching another Apple Watch, and automatically increase the display brightness by raising their wrist. The Series 9 will be available in a variety of hues, including pink, navy, red, gold, silver, and graphite.

Apple also unveiled the subsequent version of its durable Ultra smartwatch series, showcasing enhancements such as the upgraded S9 proprietary processor and a novel ultrawideband chip that employs radio waves for communication. Additionally, it incorporates a greater amount of information on the visual interface, thereby facilitating more comprehensive monitoring and analysis.

The introductory price for the Apple Watch Series 9 is set at $399, while the Ultra variant is available at a higher price point of $799. The Double Tap feature is scheduled to commence its shipping operations on Friday, September 22nd. However, its official introduction will be facilitated through a forthcoming software upgrade in the subsequent month.
