UMW president named to Virginia 500 ‘Power List’

University of Mary Washington President Troy Paino has earned a place on the prestigious Virginia Business magazine’s Virginia 500: The 2023-24 Power List. This recognition places him among the commonwealth’s most influential and powerful leaders in various fields, including business, government, politics, and education.

Virginia Business magazine’s Power List is often likened to the Fortune 500, but instead of highlighting companies, it focuses on individuals who have made significant impacts in their respective fields. The list celebrates the career journeys of these leaders, shedding light on their accomplishments and contributions.

President Troy Paino’s career journey has been marked by his leadership at two of the nation’s top public liberal arts and sciences universities. He assumed the role of President at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) in 2016, following his tenure as President of Truman State University in Missouri. Paino’s influence and achievements at UMW have not gone unnoticed, leading to his inclusion on the Virginia 500 Power List.

This year has been particularly significant for Paino and the University of Mary Washington. In March, UMW announced the largest financial gift in its 115-year history—a generous $30 million bequest from a 1959 alumna. This substantial gift is earmarked to support undergraduate research and scholarships, further enhancing the educational opportunities provided by the university.

Additionally, Paino’s compassionate and strategic leadership style earned him the NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators) 2023 President’s Award. This accolade recognizes his commitment to involving students in decision-making processes, attentiveness to their ideas and feedback, and dedication to embracing diverse perspectives.

UMW’s achievements in 2023 have showcased its dedication to excellence in education. The university received a National Science Foundation grant to fund STEM scholarships in education, celebrated its second Goldwater Scholar in two years, and unveiled plans for a laboratory school and a new theater building.

These accomplishments have propelled the University of Mary Washington to the forefront, strengthening its connections with the local Fredericksburg community, serving as an exemplar of higher education within the state, and garnering national recognition.

President Paino’s inclusion on the Virginia 500 Power List underscores his continued impact on the field of education and the broader community. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Paino has been recognized among Virginia’s most influential leaders.

The Virginia 500 Power List serves as a testament to Paino’s dedication to UMW’s mission of fostering academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. His visionary leadership continues to shape the university’s future and enhance its standing in the academic world.
